Always Eat At The Bar

Dining at the bar CC Renee S. Suen Always Eat At The Bar

One of the biggest problems with events and trade shows is that they’re too efficient. Everyone who goes is hyper-focused on business networking, and they don’t have time to get to know conferees on a basic, human level. It all feels so transactional.

This is unfortunate because people gathering is one of the best ways to grow your network, find new deals and to create lasting strategic partnerships. This is not the case at a restaurant.

Today a friend got together for a late lunch. There were no tables, so we opted to stand at the bar. As we were leaving we struck up a conversation with the group next to us about what to do for Halloween. It was a quick, fun interaction, but it got me thinking.

Bar seating is perfect for social interaction because you’re sharing space with other people, and you have a different expectation of privacy. You can talk to strangers because you’re literally rubbing shoulders.

I believe the Universe connects us with the people we need when we need them. When we’re out in social situations we let down our guard, and the right people can connect with us as humans. You never know where it might lead.

So the next time you have to the chance to eat at the bar, think of it as an opportunity waiting to be unlocked.
